What Low Tide Means When Your Body Won’t Cooperate

Most self-love advice is written for a good day. Light a candle, journal for twenty minutes, take a long bath, go for a walk. That’s lovely if you have the energy and a body that’s on board.

But what about the day the pain is loud, the light and sound hurt, and basic tasks take everything you’ve got? What does self-love look like then?

That’s low tide.

The water pulls way back, and everything you can’t do is suddenly exposed. It feels like failure. It isn’t. It’s a tide. Tides go out and come back in, on a schedule you didn’t set and can’t control.

The Low Tide Method starts from this place. Instead of building a practice for your best day and hoping you can stretch it to your worst, we build it from the worst day up. Every practice gets three versions:

High Tide: the full version, for days with energy.
Ebbing Tide: a smaller version, for days when you’re running low.
Low Tide: the tiniest version possible. You can do it from bed, in under a minute, with no supplies.

Here’s what that looks like with a simple check-in:

  • High Tide: ten minutes of journaling.
  • Ebbing Tide: three sentences in your notes app.
  • Low Tide: one hand on your chest, one slow breath, and “I’m here.”

When the smallest version counts, you can’t fall off your practice. There’s always a way back in. That’s what makes it sustainable. Self-love is not a destination. It’s a practice you return to over and over again, and returning is the whole point.

Try this week: Pick one thing you already do for yourself, like drinking tea, stretching, or writing in a journal. Write out its three versions. Notice how much lighter it feels to know you have a Low Tide option.
